I confess to being surprised by this article. As always it is well written. As always the author is well educated.
I wonder about the author's grasp of recent history. Does he not remember Nehru's not aligned movement ? Does he not remember Kissinger's dictum "the Russians will always be Russians, the Chinese will always be the Chinese".
The main members of this group have no commonalities other than sheer oppositionality. Defining yourself by what you are not is no raison d'etre.
All three of these players have historically been at war with each other and will be so again in the future.
